Message Disposition Notifications

A Message Disposition Notification, or MDN, is a notification message that indicates the disposition, or status, of a Direct Secure Message. Possible MDNs can be positive (successful delivery), negative (failed delivery), or processed (successful delivery by the sending HISP, but unconfirmed receipt by the recipient HISP).

When using the API to check message status (check the DataMotion Developer Center for more information) you will need to take note of the following numeric statuses when regarding MDNs.

  • -8
    • This corresponds to DirectMessageFailed meaning that the message was unable to reach its destination and therefore returned a failed MDN.
  • 18
    • This corresponds to DirectMessageDispatched meaning that the message was able to reach its intended recipient and returned a successful MDN.
